Solving Turbo Problems

Resolving turbocharger problems is where we will help you the most. Listed are some of the main issues and their most common causes.

HIDDEN - DO NOT REMOVE

Surging Boost Pressure

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Increased resistance to flow of gases air/exhaust rotor fouling, due to the charge air cooler or filter silencer being dirty.
  • Two stroke engines could have defective non-return valves.
  • Low air inlet temperatures.
  • Exhaust gas back pressure too high.
  • Deposits on inlet and exhaust valves.

High Boost Air Pressure

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Engine injectors faulty
  • Engine output higher than expected due to overload.
  • Gauge reading incorrectly.
  • Dirty or partly clogged / damaged nozzle ring due to foreign object

Low Boost Air Pressure

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Air manifold fouled and leaking or exhaust gas leaking between engine manifold and turbocharger inlet.
  • Pressure gauge reading incorrectly or connection leaking.
  • Dirty air filter / rotor assembly / diffuser – nozzle. Labyrinth seals worn or dirty.
  • Turbine / nozzle blading damaged.
  • Exhaust back pressure too high.
  • Compressor wheel fouled.
  • Defective bearings.
  • Rotor touching or foreign object restrictions.

High Exhaust Gas Temperatures

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Air inlet to cylinders too high, check air cooling for water circulation/temperature or tube stack blockages and insufficient venting.
  • Leaking air manifold / exhaust manifold.
  • Fuel Injection faults, possible late injection or non sealing nozzles.
  • Turbocharger filters choked or dirty compressor wheels, exhaust back pressure too high / economiser blocked.
  • Damaged turbine blades and nozzle ring.
  • Deposits on inlet or exhaust valves.

Run-Out Noise / Sluggish Starting

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Rotor fouling or dirty, damaged bearings or foreign bodies inside unit.
  • Turbine blades touching shroud ring.
  • Bearing clearance problems.

Loss of Lubrication Oil

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Excessive clearances with labyrinth sealing arrangements, bearing chamber sealing becomes compromised due to gaskets or locking elements.
  • Thrust ring or locating ring defective.
  • Excessive pressure in oil discharge or crankcase.
  • Seal air failure.
  • Dirty oil filter.
  • Oil inlet temperature too high.
  • Oil gauge defective.

Casing Leakages

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Cracks are produced by thermal stresses, brought about by uneven cooling, lack of water in cooling spaces or excessive scaling of water spaces.
  • Gas side corrosion due to sulphuric acid after ingress of moisture.
  • Erosion due to fly ash, non burnt fuel particles.

Bearing Oil Becomes Dark

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Exhaust gas enters the bearing housing.
  • Sealing air passages become blocked.
  • Rotor labyrinth seals worn or damaged, casing rotor bore worn, labyrinth clearances too large.

Abnormal Vibration Noise

Turbocharger Symptom

  • Unbalanced rotor assembly due to dirt or foreign object damaged turbine blades or compressor blades.
  • Bent rotor / rubbing clearances or defective bearings or assembly of the bearings incorrectly.
  • Rotor rubbing.
